How to ping an IP address from a PC or mobile device

With today’s high demand for internet bandwidth, it is important to know whether your network connection is working properly or not. If you ever have problems with your connection, the safest way to test it is to use the “ping” command.

When you have trouble accessing certain websites, you can quickly tell if it’s their part or if you’re having connection problems. For example, you might not be able to stream a Netflix movie properly, but you can connect and browse just fine. This is exactly the scenario in which a ping can be useful, allowing you to determine the source of the problem.

How to ping an IP address from a Windows 10 device

Doing a ping test from Windows 10 is relatively simple. All you have to do is open the Command Prompt app and type in the appropriate command. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Press the Windows key on your keyboard then start typing cmd.
  2. In the search results, you should see the Command Prompt app. Click on it. When the Command Prompt window opens, you will notice that it looks a bit different from your usual windows. It has that old school vibe, using a black background and white text.
  3. Type “ping”, add a space, and type an IP address or domain name you want to test your connection with. When you type all of this, press “Enter” on your keyboard.

For example, you can enter “ping google.com” to test your connection to Google. If you know the server’s IP address, you can use that too. To test the connection between your computer and your home router, enter the router’s IP address. In most cases, your router will have the default address of 192.168.1.1. To ping it, you will need to type “ping 192.168.1.1” and hit enter.

Once you initiate the ping, your computer will send a test data packet to the desired host and wait for a response. To ensure that the test is relevant, the computer will send four pings. Once the response arrives, you will see the test results in the command prompt window.

Right below your ping command, you’ll see the response from the server you pinged. This shows the number of bytes in each packet and the response speed in milliseconds.

Under this section, you will see the test statistics. These show the number of packets sent by your computer, the number of packets received, and the number of packets lost due to a bad connection. The good test will have four packets sent and received, with zero packets lost.

At the bottom, the time statistics section shows you how fast the data was exchanged, also in milliseconds. You will get the minimum and maximum round trip times, as well as the average time.

How to Ping an IP Address from a Mac

Similar to Windows 10, Mac uses its “Terminal” app to process text commands.

  1. Open “Finder” on your Mac.
  2. Click “Applications” in the left menu. If you don’t see it, press the “Command” and “A” keys on your keyboard at the same time.
  3. Then double-click “Utilities”.
  4. Finally, start the “Terminal” application.
  5. When you open Terminal, type the ping command: ping 192.168.1.1
  6. Press “Enter” on your keyboard.
  7. This will initiate the ping test between your computer and your home router.
  8. To end the test, simultaneously press the “Control” and “C” keys on your keyboard.

Instead of an IP address, you can also enter the domain name, such as “instagram.com”, “google.com” or any other valid domain. If you want to use an external IP address to test your connection, you can use Google’s, which is 8.8.8.8.

Once the test is complete, you will see the results. These show you how many packets your computer has sent and how long it took to get a response from the server you pinged. Below, you’ll see ping statistics telling you how many packets you sent, how many you received, and if any packets were lost on the way back. A good connection will have no dropped packets.

How to Ping an IP Address from a Chromebook

On Chrome OS, you won’t find a dedicated app for a ping test, nor will you find such a service in any of the menus. Either way, you should know that Chromebooks come with a built-in ping service. Just follow the steps below to initialize it:

  1. Simultaneously press the Ctrl, Alt and T keys on your keyboard. This will open the command prompt.
  2. Type ping google.com or ping 8.8.8.8 to test your connection with Google.
  3. Press Enter on your keyboard. Your Chromebook will now run a series of connection tests.

Just like with Windows 10 and Mac, you will get the results telling you whether the connection is working properly or not. If you lose packets, try the test again. If it still has lost packets, there may be a problem with your connection. In this case, it is better to call the customer service of your Internet service provider. If you are working on a corporate network, you should contact your network or system administrator.

How to Ping an IP Address from an iPhone

Unfortunately, iOS doesn’t have a built-in app that will let you do a ping test. Instead, you’ll need to install an app dedicated to testing network connections. Some of these most popular applications are “Ping – network utility”, “Pingify” and “Network Ping Lite”.

Of course, if you’re having trouble with your Wi-Fi connection, it’s best to disconnect and use your cellular data network to install one of the apps. This also applies to cellular connection issues. In this case, you should find a working Wi-Fi network to access the App Store.

How to Ping an IP Address from an Android Device

Just like iOS, the Android operating system does not allow pinging other routers or servers by default. Luckily, there are plenty of apps available on Google Play Store that will let you do this. Some of the applications you can use include “Ping”, “Ping & Net”, and “PingTools Network Utilities”.

While “Ping” and “Ping & Net” provide a basic ping option, “PingTools Network Utilities” is a much more advanced application. It comes with many useful network diagnostic tools that can provide detailed information about the connection you are using. You can also check network usage for each app on your phone, scan network ports, check domain owners, and more.

How to Ping an IP Address Using an Online Web Service

If you don’t want to use an app to perform a ping test, many websites will allow you to do so. Please note that these services only allow you to ping public servers and you will not be able to ping your home network router. Not unless it has a static IP address.

Some of the online services you can try include “Site24x7”, “IPAddressGuide”, “Ping.EU”, “Network Tools” and “Wormly”. All of these are completely free.

Test your connection

I hope you have learned how to use the “ping” command on your device. Knowing how to test your connection is a very useful thing, especially when Internet traffic is slow on your computer. And if you don’t want to install another app on your mobile device, you can use one of the online ping services.

Did you manage to use the ping command? Did you achieve “zero packet loss” or not? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
