YOUR iPhone can quickly become cluttered with apps and photos, even if you have plenty of storage space.

This is especially the case if you’ve been using multiple iPhones for years and have different apps that you’ve long forgotten about but want to keep.

Fortunately, Apple has a few tricks up its sleeve to tidy things up a bit.

And best of all, that doesn’t have to mean completely deleting your favorite apps.

iOS has a handy app offload feature that will essentially remove the app from your phone, but keep it available should you want it working again.

Apple will automatically offload unused apps for you – although it’s unclear how long an app has to be idle for it to be chosen.

How to enable offloading unused apps

To enable offloading unused apps, go to Settings.

To find App storethen enable the toggle next to Offload unused apps.

Alternatively, you can manually choose the apps you want.

Just go to Generalthen iPhone Storage.

Select the app to remove and press Download the app.

Are there any downsides to offloading unused apps?

There is, however, a slight issue to consider when offloading apps.

If an app is removed from the App Store, you may no longer be able to download it.

And remember that you will still need a connection to re-download apps next time.

For example, it might not be a good idea to offload a hiking app and then try to download it while on a long walk in the middle of nowhere with no data available.
